about

George Burt (guitar) and Clíona Cassidy (voice) are a new partnership exploring the territory between songwriting, improvisation and performance. Rain Shadow, a post-lockdown collection of songs and duos, is their first album, made after a series of performances at Jazz NorthEast, GIOFest, and the Bitches Brew concert series promoting female-led groups and ensembles. Inspired by nature and the environment, the recording features a range of material from fully-composed songs to pieces developed through improvisation and text.
The music was recorded at the legendary John Cavanagh’s Glo-Spot studios.

George and Cliona are members of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (“one of the best large improvising ensembles in the world” Jazz on 3), and combine their backgrounds in jazz, folk and opera to create a unique sound.
“Cassidy uses her voice in such an extraordinary manner it should be classed as a musical instrument, rather than a deliverer of lyrics. Burt is a superb improvising guitarist constantly changing mood and accent, and this, coupled with Cassidy’s remarkable operatic voice, produced both auditory fireworks and fascinating tranquil passages. A brilliant combination…” (bebop spoken here)

“This beautiful record ranges from gossamer singing and angular guitar strings to a jagged squawk caught by velvet acoustic. All points between strays into folk, organic free passages, jungle plants and insects, the spirit of Vashti Bunyan in the 60s, Harry Partch and his 43 tone octave and the incredible instant composition of Cliona Cassidy and George Burt. All this from her voice and his guitar. “ (Gordon MacLean)
